Mid February, a few weeks before the main Carnaval, Potosi hosts the miner’s carnival. This involves processions down from Cerro Rico to the town, lots of drinking, and lots of water fights. I got a taxi first thing in the morning up to the top of town, to the mine entrances, to photograph the day from the start. The miners were assembling at their co-operatives, and blessing a statue that they would then parade down the road, into Potosi and the town centre.
It all started off pretty well but when I tried to leave and head home I was absolutely battered by water bombs, it was like walking through the valley of death. With a hill of willing assailants on one side and a slope leading off downwards on the other side of the road, I had no chance, and being a ‘gringo’ was given extra special attention!
