Six Day Cycling London – October 2017

For the last 3 years I’ve been covering the annual Six Day track cycling event in London. It makes a nice change from the other types of commercial work I typically undertake during the rest of the year. The client is the event organiser, Six Day, itself. They need the images for their marketing and promotional activities throughout the year, and they use the images via their social media during and after the event.

The event originates from a bet made in 1878 by David Stanton that he could ride 1,000 miles in six successive days, riding 18 hours a day. A Mr. Davis put up £100 and the stake was held by the Sporting Life newspaper. Stanton started at 6am on 25 February and won the bet in 73 hours, riding on a high-wheeled machine at an average speed of 13.5 mph. From Britain six-day cycling spread to Europe, and was brought to its modern format in the USA. Now it is a team event, with the winner being the one who completes the most laps.

Six Day London is held at The Velodrome (built for the 2012 London Olympics). The distinctive wooden exterior is made from Siberian Pine. Its great to see one of the Olympic venues being used and creating some legacy, it is also open to the public throughout the week.
