I was last on the tiny island of Burano 12 years ago, still working with film; a Hasselblad Xpan and Nikon F80, both loaded with Fuji Velvia ISO 50 or 100. Now it is such a different photographic landscape, working with digital means I could begin my pictures at ISO 400 to cope with the overcast conditions, and then as it brightened up, get back to an optimum ISO of 64-100. Back when I was shooting exclusively on film I would have been constrained to either carrying a tripod everywhere, or having to work at uncomfortably wide apertures. Nowadays a visit to somewhere as unique and colourful as Burano is more of an Instagram shoot than anything else, for most young visitors. The buildings were originally painted in such a variety of colours to help their fishermen find their way home on the regular foggy days encountered in this part of the Adriatic Sea.

We travelled to Northern Italy during the “Beast from the East” – a week of freakishly cold weather which landed on Europe on Eastern winds in late February. So we didn’t see much more of Lake Garda than the picture below.

Would highly recommend the thermal spa in the lakeside town of Sirmione – spent 5 hours there, and could have stayed longer.
Messages of love left by visitors to Juliet’s Balcony, Verona, Veneto Province, Italy, Europe
A house in Verona was allocated as Juliet’s house (Romeo & Juliet) by the Verona council, and since has predictably become a major tourist attraction in the city, despite Juliet being a fictional character and Shakespeare never having visited the city.
