Out on the boat in the early morning calm, I’ve done the recce trip the evening before but knew there was still an image here that had eluded me, this time the boat-woman understands my gesturing and knows I want her to paddle towards the sunrise. Times like this I’m so glad I’ve got this focal length to reach for – it was a toss up between taking this 14-24mm Nikon lens, or a dedicated portrait lens (135mm F/2 Nikon) on the trip ( six weeks in Southeast Asia). With it on the camera I know I’m going to be able to include everything around me, hoping to make the viewer feel like they could have been have been sitting inside that boat. The downside with this lens is that you can’t mount filters unless you get the costly Lee adaptor, but it was worth buying for its unrivalled sharpness and little distortion at the wide end.
